That is it for the day from us. A day full of excitement, mystery, controversies, disqualification and reverts , new beginnings and lots more. India did not fare well today but Vijender Singh , P Kashyap and Soumyajit Ghosh , did lend some respectability. Catch all the action with NDTV again later today as the Olympics and all the events heat up.
Boxing: Here is the Vijender Singh story. Capped off an otherwise disappointing day for India with a brilliant win.
Boxing: Vijender Singh has won his bout and through to the round of 16 in the men's middle weight 75-kg category. He beat Danabek Suzhanov of Kazakhstan 14-10.

Cycling: Freshly-crowned Olympic road race champion Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan has won the Gold and retired from the sport immediately after that. Vinokourov served a two-year ban for blood doping between 2007 and 2009 and completed the Tour de France last week having fought his way back from a broken shin. Read here
Tennis: Sania Mirza/Rushmi Chakravarthy's first round match in women's doubles has begun. The Indian pair lead are tied at 1-1 in the first set against Chinese Taipei pair of Chuang/Hsieh.
Weightlifting: Soniya Chanu tries hard and lifts a total of 171kg in her weightlifting women's 48kg category. Out of medal contention though.
Table tennis: India's Soumyajit Ghosh wins his first round match 11-9, 14-12, 7-11, 12-10, 5-11, 12-10 over Brazil's Tsuboi G. Some consolation on a disappointing day till now.
Tennis: Roger Federer manages to beat Alejandro Falla in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. It was a scare for him though.
Tennis: China's Li Na crashes out of the Olympic tournament in the first round as the world number 11 was beaten 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 by Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova.

Badminton: Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa have lost their first match in the Group B of the Women's doubles. They lost 16-21, 18-21 to Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa of Japan. Not a good start at all.
Swimming: South Korea appealed to the swimming governing body FINA, which ruled to reinstate Park Tae-hwan after reviewing video footage, a FINA official has apparently told The Associated Press. The decision is not yet public though.
Cycling: Meanwhile, Alexander Vinokourov of Kazakhstan has won the Gold in the road race at the Olympics. He is the first man to win two Olympic medals in the cycling road race. Colombia's Rigoberto Uran takes silver & Norway's Alexander Kristoff wins bronze. Read story here

Tennis: Wimbledon champion Serena Williams cruised through to the second round of the Olympic tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Serbia's Jelena Jankovic.
Rowing: New Zealand's Hamish Bond and Eric Murray set a new men's pairs rowing world record in the Olympic heats, smashing the mark held by Britain's Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell.
Shooting: South Korean sharpshooter Jin Jong-Oh won Olympic men's 10m air pistol gold on the first day of action at London's Royal Artillery Barracks.
Women's weightlifting: Soniya Chanu's 48kg weightlifting event is on. Soniya best lift was 74kgs in the snatch. She missed her last lift at 75kg.

Boxing: Shiva Thapa has lost his round of 32 against Oscar Valdez Fierro of Mexico in the 56kg bantamweight category. He lost the third round by 3-7 and overall 9-14.

Women's football: Japanese women, going for an Olympic gold to add to the World Cup title they won last year, were held to a goalless draw by Sweden in their second group match. Japan did win their first match though. Read story here
In tennis event, sixth seed but out of sorts Tomas Berdych has bid goodbye in the first round itself. Ana Ivanovic, though, did advance in her singles first round match. Read story here
Olympic champion Park Tae-hwan of South Korea did touch the wall first in his 400 freestyle heat, but was disqualified for a false start on the opening day of Olympic swimming. American Michael Phelps did manage to scrape through to the final in the 400-meter individual medley by seven-hundredth of a second. MEANWHILE: Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku has become the first athlete caught doping at the London Olympics after failing a test for a banned steroid. Pulaku tested positive for stanozolol in London on July 23, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said. Lady swimmer from USA, Dana Vollmer has posted an Olympic record in Women's 100m Butterfly.
She finished with an astonishing time of 56.25 in her heat to enter the semifinals. 16 female swimmers will now battle it out for a spot in the finals which will take place tomorrow.
