Man sets himself ablaze, tries to drag a woman into the flames

Jakarta: An Indonesian who failed to win the love of a married work colleague set himself ablaze in his office and tried to drag her into the flames, police and media reports said on Thursday.

Mochamad Zikra, a 30-year-old cargo logistics employee, doused himself with petrol and set fire to himself at his Jakarta office on Wednesday, city police spokesman Rikwanto told AFP.

Local media reported that he tried to drag Santi Diosaka Gumelar, a 26-year-old married colleague believed to be his love interest, into the fire with him as a female colleague struggled to pull her away.

"Both women managed to pry themselves out of Zikra's grasp and ran out of the office, suffering burns," Rikwanto said. They were taken to hospital, where Zikra was pronounced dead.

"We suspect it was over a romance," the spokesman said, without giving details.

A sub-district chief police detective in eastern Jakarta, Entong, told The Jakarta Globe daily that Zikra had been in love with Gumelar for two years.

"But because she's married, Santi rejected Zikra," said Entong.
