Toronto: A man was shot and injured outside one of the largest Sikh temples in Canada at a time when a wedding ceremony was taking place at the shrine.
Police and ambulance rushed to the scene at Guru Nanak temple in Surrey in British Columbia, one of the largest Sikh temples in North America, after shots rang out on Saturday afternoon during the ceremony.
The incident occurred in the parking lot where police found a man struck by bullets in his upper thigh, but otherwise not in a life-threatening condition.
The injured man's identity as well as that of the assailant, were not released.
"As far as we understand, it was a personal dispute that unfortunately found its way into the Gurdwara parking lot," said a release by the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society.
"This event or the individuals involved have no connection with this Gurdwara and the Gurdwara strongly condemns this and every act of violence," The Globe and Mail newspaper reported.
Witnesses said an argument broke out between two people at the wedding, who are believed to have had a long-standing feud, it said.
Police called it a targeted shooting and say the suspect is known to them, though he wasn't immediately apprehended.
Violence flared at the same temple in 1997.
The temple officials pointed out that Saturday's shooting is an isolated incident.
