Man With Meat Cleaver Shot By Officers After Attack: Police

Police officers block off west 32nd street after they were attacked by a man with meat cleaver.

NEW YORK: Authorities say a man who was shot by New York City police after he struck an off-duty detective with a meat cleaver was initially stopped because he was trying to remove a boot from a vehicle that he was apparently living in.

The shooting happened Thursday about a block from Madison Square Garden.

Police say as officers approached 32-year-old Akram Joudeh, he pulled out a meat cleaver and ran.

Officers chased him, and at one point shot him with a Taser, with no apparent effect.

Police say an off-duty detective tried to tackle him. That's when they say Joudeh hacked the detective's face with the meat cleaver, and officers opened fire.

Joudeh is hospitalized in critical, but stable condition. The detective is being treated for a six-inch gash on his face.
