Mexico City:
The mayor of a small mountain town in western Mexico has been shot to death and authorities say a drug cartel appears to have been involved in the killing.
The chief prosecutor in the western state of Jalisco says Mayor Manuel Gomez Torres was shot near his ranch in the mountain town of Ayutla.
Prosecutor Luis Carlos Najera told the Milenio television station that a ranch employee was also killed in the Sunday attack.
Najera said Monday that prosecutors "believe this is an issue ... of organised crime."
About two dozen mayors have been killed in Mexico in recent years. Many apparently received threats or extortion demands from criminal gangs.
