Shaken by the murder of a 21-year old Indian student in Melbourne, a high-profile priest has urged the victim's killer to surrender to him.
Father Bob Maguire along with prominent suburban youth worker Les Twentyman said they are of belief that the culprit, or culprits, behind the killing of Nitin Garg might be too scared to give themselves up to police.
"We could act as circuit breakers," Fr Maguire was today quoted by an AAP report as saying. "At least the perpetrator would be guaranteed safe passage to the police."
Twentyman said if the offender surrendered he would see to it that he receives good legal representation.
He said the western suburbs have been shaken by the "senseless" killing and the people want to show that they were "not racist".
He is hoping to organise a community day on Australia Day to bring together the ethnic groups in the area.
"It would give us the chance to show support to the Indian community and to show that we are very multicultural," Twentyman said.
Garg was stabbed in the abdomen by unidentified assailants at a park here while he was on his way to his part-time job in a restaurant on January 2. He later died in a hospital.
