Beijing:
Eleven suspects, including one each in China and India, have been detained on charges of being members of an international gang of hackers during a joint operation by Chinese, Indian, US and Romanian police.
The suspects were detained in the four countries, the Ministry of Public Security said today. Five suspects were caught in the US and four in Romania.
The Chinese suspect, identified only as Liu, was detained on January 24 and confessed during interrogation that he was hired by other suspects from the US and Europe to hack email accounts and steal private information, the ministry said.
The arrests were made during the joint operation with Indian and Romanian police and the US FBI, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. No further details were immediately available.
Last year, the FBI invited Chinese police to join the investigation of several websites offering email account hacking services.
