Mexico Airport Agents Abused Travelers: Rights Agency
The governmental National Human Rights Commission said 17 officers from the National Migration Institute committed abuses against 20 foreigners and one Mexican between July 6, 2014, and June 17, 2015.
Mexico City: Migration agents violated the rights of 21 travelers at Mexico City's international airport, verbally abusing them and holding them over 24 hours without legal orders, a human rights agency said Monday.

The governmental National Human Rights Commission said 17 officers from the National Migration Institute committed abuses against 20 foreigners and one Mexican between July 6, 2014, and June 17, 2015.

Fifteen of the 21 travelers were not allowed to enter Mexico and were returned to the country of origin.

"In several cases, various victims were rejected from the national territory by public servants who lacked the legal attributes to do so," the commission said in a statement.

The travelers underwent "total isolation" as well as "verbal aggression by migration personnel," the statement said.

They were also held over 24 hours on the basis of inexistent requirements from judicial authorities and were interviewed without the presence of a translator by personnel who lacked the legal authority to do so.

The commission urged the migration agency to compensate the victims, punish the agents and ensure that detainees have enough food, water and mats as well as access to telephones, translators and visitors.
