Mexico City, Mexico : Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman will face hearings for his possible extradition to the United States following his recapture, authorities said Saturday.
The Mexican attorney general's office said the proceedings are based on two extradition requests made by US authorities last year, but it did not indicate when they would start.
"With Guzman Loera's recapture, the respective extradition proceedings will have to start," the office said in a statement, noting that prosecutors obtained two arrest warrants for his extradition last year.
Lawyers for Guzman will have three days to file objections and 20 more days to prove them, though that timeframe can be extended, the statement said.
The attorney general's office said it would "bring evidence to fight" the objections.
Guzman was arrested on Friday in Los Mochis, a coastal city in his northwestern home state of Sinaloa, six months after his prison break.
President Enrique Pena Nieto had balked at extraditing Guzman prior to his escape, but the government has apparently decided to change tack.
