Islamabad: Heavily armed militants stormed a district police chief's office at Dera Ismail Khan in northwest Pakistan today, triggering a gun battle with security forces, officials said.
About five militants, who were wearing police uniforms, were involved in the attack on the police office, officials were quoted as saying by TV news channels.
Reporters at the site said they had heard at least six explosions and intermittent firing.
It could not immediately be ascertained whether there were any casualties or if the attackers had taken any hostages within the office.
The militants lobbed grenades and fired with automatic weapons as they barged into the office, TV news channels reported.
At least one suicide bomber was believed to be among the attackers, the channels reported.
The district police chief's office is located in a high- security zone that also has a court complex and lawyers offices. Security forces cordoned off and evacuated the area.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack though such assaults are usually blamed on the Pakistani Taliban.
