Kiev: Two Ukrainian civilians were killed and 11 servicemen injured today in mine blasts in separatist eastern Ukraine, which remains littered with explosive devices left behind by its 18-month revolt, officials said.
The warring sides have been suffering casualties mostly in mine incidents but not in open combat since Kiev and pro-Russian insurgents signed their latest in a series of truce agreements on September 1.
A local official in the government-held part of the east reported the death of two women after they hit "an unknown explosive device" in Stanytsya Luganska, a village close to the front line splitting rebel lands from the rest of Ukraine.
Another nine government border guards were wounded as their truck hit a landmine near Krasna Talivka, another village on the edge of Ukraine's Russian border.
The United Nations estimates that the war has killed more than 8,000 people and displaced 1.5 million, although it has also warned that the actual figures may be much higher.
