Melbourne:
The Australian government has repeatedly assured New Delhi it's doing all it can to ensure the safety of Indian students. But another grim reminder came on Tuesday of how much more needs to be done. Three Indians were brutally beaten up by a group of 80 people in Melbourne by attackers who shouted 'go back to India'.
Seven people have been arrested, but for a tense Indian student community it means little.
Three men, two of them students, were brutally beaten in a Melbourne suburb over the weekend. They were heckled while playing pool and then attacked with bottles in the parking lot.
Mukhtiar Singh, a cab driver whose lived in Australia for over 20 years, says he hasn't heard from the police in two days while the police claim to have arrested seven people.
The most badly injured is Sukhdev Singh. He has a broken jaw and may lose his memory.
"When we came out, there were many Australians standing there, about 70 to 80," said Sukhdev Singh.
"The first three or four people got hold of my brother. I tried to help him. But 10 to 15 people started beating me. They banged my head into the pavement and after that I don't remember what happened and how I reached the hospital," he added.
