Kathmandu:
A moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitude shook northwestern Nepal Friday, an official at the National Seismological Network said.
The epicentre of the tremor, which occurred at 5:25 pm local time (1110 GMT), was in the southwest Rukum district, 280 kilometres (173 miles) west of Kathmandu, Dilli Ram Tiwari, a seismologist at the Network told AFP.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage but he said that it had capacity to damage houses near the epicentre.
"This was a moderate earthquake and the tremor was felt in several districts in the western hills," Tiwari said, adding that tremors were also felt in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu.
A 6.9-magnitude earthquake on the Nepal-India border in September 2011 killed at least 110 people across four countries, including three in Kathmandu.
