London:

There seems to be no end to the spate of resignations by ministers in British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Cabinet; results of local elections show that the ruling Labour party has lost even in their strongholds in Britain.

Seven ministers from the Gordon brown's Cabinet quit within hours of each other. And some even have had scathing remarks about the PM's leadership while leaving.

The dramatic developments have left political reporters scrambling to keep pace.

The Opposition is calling the government dysfunctional and is demanding elections be held now. With local election results showing the Opposition Tories have made huge gains in Labour heartland, Conservative leader tipped to be the next PM can't hide his glee.

"With an economy in the state that ours is in, you need a government that is strong and united, that can take long term decisions and not just getting through the next few days which is clearly the Prime Minister's focus," said David Cameron, Leader, Conservative Party.

However Brown, never a deeply popular politician, says he is going nowhere. But often in the course of the press conference he held, the stress of the last few days showed on his face.

"I accept the responsibility, but I'm not going to walk away from our duty to the country. I am going to get on with the task," he said.

Seen as someone who has not accepted responsibility for his part in plunging the country into a recession, there is widespread discontent within his party who feel they are headed for a disastrous showing in the upcoming election under his leadership.

Here at the political capital of Westminster, it's looking like a bloodbath for the Prime Minister. And it isn't over yet.

Conservatives have been victorious in the local elections held across the UK. The Labour is expected to do badly in the EU election results, which will come out on Sunday. Bloodied and thrashing about for some relief, the PM hangs on to his job for now.
