'Multiple injuries' as passenger train derails in New York

Cars from the Metro-North passenger train are scattered after the train derailed in the Bronx neighborhood of New York on December 1, 2013.

New York: The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) says there are "multiple injuries" in a passenger train derailment, but the extent of the injuries is unclear.

The FDNY says the train derailment in the Bronx was reported at 7:20 a.m. Sunday near the Spuyten Duyvil station. The fire department says 130 firefighters are on the scene.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says four or five cars on the seven-car train derailed about 100 yards (90 metres) north of the station on a curved section of the track. But the MTA says none of the cars entered the Hudson or Harlem rivers, which are adjacent.

The agency says the crash was reported by the engineer and it wasn't clear if any crew members are injured.
