Chicago:
LeT operative Tawahurrur Rana is not likely to win his release from federal custody anytime soon.
Rana, a Pakistani-born Canadian national, appeared before U.S. District Judge Matthew F. Kennelly on Wednesday in hopes of renewing his long-running plea for bail. But Kennelly said he is not certain that he will continue to be in charge of the case, and would not act on the bail request until he knows for sure.
Rana has been in custody since October 18th 2009. His attorney, Patrick Blegen, said that if asked Rana would deny the charges against him.
Prosecutors said they expect to obtain an indictment no later than January 14.
Rana is one of three men charged in the alleged plot to attack Danish newspaper in retaliation for its publication in 2005 of a dozen cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Some Muslims considered the cartoons to be highly offensive.
