California: Google chief Sundar Pichai has come out in support of Muslims and minorities, diving into a widening debate on intolerance after Presidential hopeful Donald Trump called for shutting them out of US.

In a blog post called 'Let's not let fear defeat our values' without naming the Republican Party frontrunner, Mr Pichai said it was "disheartening to see the intolerant discourse playing out in the news these days".

"We must support Muslim and other minority communities in the US and around the world," the 43-year-old tech executive said.

The comments come after Mr Trump called for a "complete shutdown of Muslims entering United States" that have also drawn condemnation from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon chief Jeff Bezos.

"Open-mindedness, tolerance, and acceptance of new Americans is one of the country's greatest strengths," Mr Pichai wrote.

Mr Pichai further wrote, "I debated whether to post this, because lately it seems that criticism of intolerance just gives more oxygen to this debate."

"But I feel we must speak out - particularly those of us who are not under attack. Everyone has the right to their views, but it's also important that those who are less represented know that those are not the views of all," he said.

Even though most Americans oppose Mr Trump's views on Muslims, according a national poll, another showed that the real-estate tycoon's popularity rose among conservative Republican voters in the wake of his comments.
