Myanmar Earthquake LIVE Updates: The number of deaths caused by a massive earthquake that hit Myanmar and Thailand rose in both countries on Sunday. In Myanmar, about 1,700 people are confirmed dead so far, about 3,400 injured and around 300 more missing, according to the ruling junta.

Likewise, the number of deaths in Bangkok rose to 17, according to city authorities. According to the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority, 32 people were injured and 82 still unaccounted for - most from the site of a 30-storey tower block under construction that collapsed when the 7.7 magnitude quake struck on Friday.

The quake struck northwest of the city of Sagaing in central Myanmar, and was followed by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock minutes later. It destroyed buildings, downed bridges, and buckled roads across the country, with massive destruction seen in Mandalay, the country's second biggest city and home to more than 1.7 million people.

Red Cross Seeks More Than $100 Million For Myanmar Quake

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies launched an emergency appeal Sunday for more than $100 million to help victims of the devastating earthquake in Myanmar.

The IFRC, the world's largest humanitarian network, said the country suffered extensive destruction in Friday's 7.7-magnitude quake near the central city of Mandalay, and needs were growing by the hour.

"To scale up support, the IFRC launches an emergency appeal for 100 million Swiss francs ($115 million) to assist 100,000 people (20,000 households) with life-saving relief and early recovery support over the next 24 months," it said in a statement.

With temperatures rising and the monsoon season approaching within weeks, affected communities need stabilising urgently "before secondary crises emerge", it said.

"This is not just a disaster; it is a complex humanitarian crisis layered over existing vulnerabilities," said Alexander Matheou, the IFRC's Asia Pacific regional director.

Myanmar's Military Continues To Bomb Towns Amid Deadly Earthquake Crisis

An armed resistance movement against Myanmar's military-run government criticised the junta on Sunday for conducting airstrikes on villages even as the country reels from an earthquake that has killed around 1,700 people.

The Karen National Union, one of Myanmar's oldest ethnic armies, said in a statement that the junta "continues to carry out airstrikes targeting civilian areas, even as the population suffers tremendously from the earthquake".

The group said that under normal circumstances, the military would be prioritising relief efforts, but instead is focused on "deploying forces to attack its people".

A spokesman for the junta did not reply to queries from Reuters about the criticism.

"Strike-Slip", "Boom In Skyscrapers": What Made Myanmar Quake So Deadly

Experts say that the devastating earthquake in Myanmar on Friday was likely the strongest to hit the country in decades, with disaster modelling suggesting thousands could be dead.

Automatic assessments from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the shallow 7.7-magnitude quake northwest of the central Myanmar city of Sagaing triggered a red alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.

"High casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread," it said, locating the epicentre near the central Myanmar city of Mandalay, home to more than a million people.

Bill McGuire, emeritus professor of geophysical and climate hazards at University College London (UCL), said it was "probably the biggest earthquake on the Myanmar mainland in three-quarters of a century".

Rebecca Bell, a tectonics expert at Imperial College London (ICL), suggested it was a side-to-side "strike-slip" of the Sagaing Fault.

Myanmar Quake Struck Mosques As Minority Muslims Gathered For Ramadan Prayers

When Friday's powerful earthquake struck central Myanmar, Htet Min Oo was performing ritual ablutions before Ramadan prayers at a mosque next to his house in Mandalay.

His home collapsed along with part of the mosque, trapping half his body with the rubble of a wall that buried two of his aunts. Residents raced to pull the aunts out, he said, but only one survived.

Htet Min Oo, 25, said two uncles and his grandmother were also trapped under piles of concrete. With no heavy equipment available, he tried desperately to clear the rubble with his hands but could not shift it.

"I don't know if they are still alive under the debris. After so long, I don't think there's any hope," he said on Friday.

"There's too much rubble and no rescue teams have come for us," he added, his voice shaking as he broke into tears.

Hundreds of Muslims are feared among the dead in Myanmar after the shallow quake struck as worshippers gathered at mosques for Friday prayers in the holy month.

More than 50 mosques sustained damage, according to the shadow National Unity Government.

Video: How Nurses Shielded Babies When Myanmar Quake Shook China

At least 1,644 people have died, and more than 3,400 are left injured after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday. The quake's tremors were felt across several neighbouring countries, including Thailand, China, India, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. Amid the devastation, CCTV footage from a hospital in China's Yunnan shows two maternity ward nurses risking their lives to protect newborns as the earthquake violently shook the facility.

The video, now widely shared on social media, shows a ward filled with cradles carrying infants when the tremors began. The violent shaking caused the wheeled beds to roll uncontrollably across the room. One nurse, seated on the floor cradling a baby, instinctively grabbed a bassinet to stop it from being flung away. The second nurse, standing nearby, quickly moved to steady two cribs swaying under the impact.

Aftershocks Rattle Mandalay As Rescuers Search For Survivors In Myanmar Quake

Residents scoured collapsed buildings Sunday searching for survivors as aftershocks rattled the devastated city of Mandalay, AFP reported.

The initial 7.7-magnitude quake struck near the central Myanmar city of Mandalay early Friday afternoon, followed minutes later by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock.

The tremors collapsed buildings, downed bridges and buckled roads, with mass destruction seen in the city of more than 1.7 million people.

Tea shop owner Win Lwin picked his way through the remains of a collapsed restaurant on a main road in his neighbourhood early on Sunday, tossing bricks aside one by one.

"About seven people died here" when the quake struck, he told AFP.

"I'm looking for more bodies but I know there cannot be any survivors."

About an hour later, a small aftershock struck, sending people scurrying out of a hotel for safety, following a similar tremor felt late Saturday evening.

And around 2:00 pm (0730 GMT), another aftershock -- of 5.1-magnitude according to the US Geological Survey -- sent people into the streets in alarm once again, temporarily halting rescue work.

Bangkok Ground Report: Rubble Mountain, 50 Trapped And A Race Against Time

Robots, heavy machinery, and rescue personnel continue to search for workers trapped under the rubble of a 30-storey collapsed building in Bangkok, around 40 hours after a series of earthquakes left a trail of destruction in Myanmar and Thailand.

At least 50 people are likely trapped under the four-storey-high pile of rubble of the skyscraper. Bangkok's Chatu Chak market, a major tourist attraction, remains the worst-hit part of the city, with around 500-600 buildings being inspected for damages after the earthquake.

Experts claim that only 10 per cent of Bangkok's buildings are earthquake-proof and hotels have issued notices to guests about areas under inspection and the possibility of evacuation if issues are found.

US special forces are assisting the Bangkok rescue operations. Scientists have sent robots for 3D mapping and special cameras to track those trapped under the rubble. Drones are also flying round-the-clock over impacted areas to monitor the situation.

Myanmar Earthquake Live: What We Know

A powerful earthquake centred in Myanmar has killed more than 150 people in the war-torn country and neighbouring Thailand and caused widespread damage.

Here is what we know:

Powerful, and shallow

The 7.7-magnitude quake hit northwest of Myanmar's Sagaing at 12:50 pm (0650 GMT) on Friday at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (six miles).

It was followed minutes later by a powerful 6.7-magnitude aftershock and a dozen smaller tremors.

Over 150 killed

At least 144 people have been confirmed dead in the quake in Myanmar, according to the country's junta chief.

However, Min Aung Hlaing warned the toll was likely to rise given the widespread destruction across the country.

Widespread damage

The quake caused extensive damage in Myanmar.

There was massive destruction in Mandalay, where multiple buildings collapsed into piles of rubble and twisted metal coated in dust, dotted with people attempting rescues.

The Ava bridge running across the Irawaddy river from Sagaing, built nearly 100 years ago, collapsed into the swirling waters below.

Aid pleas, offers

The scale of the devastation prompted Myanmar's isolated military regime to make a rare plea for international assistance.

Myanmar's junta chief invited "any country, any organisation" to help with relief and said he he "opened all ways for foreign aid".

Offers of assistance flooded in, with India among the first to say it was ready to help.

Myanmar Earthquake Live: How Vulnerable Is Myanmar To Earthquakes?

Myanmar lies on the boundary between two tectonic plates and is one of the world's most seismically active countries, although large and destructive earthquakes have been relatively rare in the Sagaing region. "The plate boundary between the India Plate and Eurasia Plate runs approximately north-south, cutting through the middle of the country," said Joanna Faure Walker, a professor and earthquake expert at University College London. She said the plates move past each other horizontally at different speeds. While this causes "strike slip" quakes that are normally less powerful than those seen in "subduction zones" like Sumatra, where one plate slides under another, they can still reach magnitudes of 7 to 8.
