NASA called in to help trapped Chile miners

San Jose: The miners trapped miles below the ground in Chile are getting to hear from their loved ones.

Relatives spent the evening writing notes and sending them down a narrow tube that's been established there.

The 33 miners are stuck deep below a mine that zig-zags under a barren mountain in the northern part of the country.

They've been there since the mine shaft collapsed back on August 5 and it may be Christmas before they get out.

Chile's mining minister says the rescue process is moving forward and the last of the heavy machinery needed to bore down to them arrived on the scene Tuesday.

So far the miners have been able to survive by rationing the two-days of emergency food they had on them as well as limiting the use of their lights and other equipment.

Chile is now turning to NASA to come up with ways to help the miners survive their extended time in the cramped quarters.

For now all the miners and their loved ones can do is wait and hope for the best.
