Next Up From Pope Francis? An Album, of Course
Pope Francis is scheduled to release an album, "Wake Up!," on Nov. 27.
Usually the tour comes after the album. For Pope Francis, however, it's the other way around: He is scheduled to release an album, "Wake Up!," on Nov. 27, following his whirlwind US trip, during which he has been greeted by hundreds of thousands of well-wishers. The album features the pope's speeches set to rock, pop, and Gregorian chants, and will raise money for a support fund for refugees.

Released in collaboration with European-based label Believe Digital, the 11-track album pulls excerpts from the pope's speeches since 2013, given in Italian, Spanish, English and Portuguese. The first released track, "Wake Up! Go! Go! Forward!," features reverberating electric guitars and pounding drum fills and is a call to action, as Francis says, "No one who sleeps can sing, dance or rejoice." His speech is followed by a sung heavy rock melody.

This is not the first time an album has come from the Vatican. Don Giulio Neroni, producer and artistic director of "Wake Up!," also worked on an album with speeches from Pope John Paul II. Pope Benedict XVI released an album, "Alma Mater," in 2009 that included his own singing voice. "As in the past, for this album too, I tried to be strongly faithful to the pastoral and personality of Pope Francis: the Pope of dialogue, open doors, hospitality," Neroni told Rolling Stone.
