No special envoy on Kashmir: US

Washington:

The United States on Thursday once again ruled out the possibility of appointing any special envoy on Kashmir, a demand being made by certain quarters in Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists.

"I can assure you we are not going to appoint a special Kashmir envoy," US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake told reporters.

"This is longstanding US policy that this is an issue that needs to be worked between India and Pakistan, and we do not have plans to appoint an envoy," Blake said, on the eve of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's India visit.

Despite pressure from certain quarters, the Obama Administration has been consistent in its stand that the Kashmir issue could only be resolved by dialogue between India and Pakistan and that there is no role for the US in it.

In the past, the US said it would encourage the two countries to start a dialogue to reduce tension between the two.

Blake said the US has played no role in the recent meetings between leaders of the two countries.
