NRI builder held in UK for wife's murder in Punjab
London: A 41-year-old NRI builder has been arrested by the British police for allegedly murdering his wife in Punjab two years ago, a case that was closed by Indian authorities after terming it as an accident.

Jagpaljeet Singh Kular, a resident of Cranford, was remanded to custody by the Sutton Magistrate's court and will appear before the Old Bailey court here in October.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said Kular was arrested for hatching a conspiracy to kill his wife Manjit Kaur Kular (41), a British citizen, during a visit to India in October 2007.

Though Punjab police had closed the case after terming it as a car accident, the Scotland Yard pursued it and arrested Kular on murder charges.

Manjit's relatives alleged that Jagpaljeet was an illegal immigrant who had married Manjit just to get British citizenship and used to "ill-treat" her.

Claiming that Manjit lived under "some kind of fear", her sister-in-law Rajwinder said the couple went to India in October 2007 and were staying at Bija near Khanna where Manjit's in-laws are based. She died on the Diwali night after allegedly being hit by a car.

Manjit's body was lying on roadside all night and there were no injury marks except that her face was smashed beyond recognition, Rajwinder claimed.
