An NRI woman and three others were declared proclaimed offenders by a local court for allegedly hiring men to get a businessman from Australia murdered during a visit to Punjab.
Ravinder Kaur Toor, who has been residing in Australia, has been charged with conspiring to murder Malwinder Singh Pandher as she blamed him for the strained ties between her husband Jagdish Toor and his business partner Michael Bhullar, also Malwinder's brother-in-law.
Malwinder, a permanent resident of Sydney, was assaulted on May 1 last year during a visit to his native place Sirhind but survived the attack. Police had registered a case under various sections of the IPC against Ravinder and Jagdish.
The court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Fatehgarh Sahib declared Ravinder, a resident of Orchard Hill, Sydney, her brother Davinder Singh, who lives in Moga (Punjab), and two other residents Jaswinder Singh, Hardeep Singh, as POs.
An inquiry was conducted by Superintendent of Police (detective) Fatehgarh Sahib Shamsher Singh. According to Singh's report, when Malwinder last year visited India, Ravinder contacted her brother Davinder and he along with his 4-5 accomplices of his village hired contract killers.
They tried several times to assault Malwinder but could not succeed and on May 1, 2008 when Malwinder was about to return to Australia they attacked him with sharp edged weapons when he went to a market in Sirhind.
Though police arrested two of the accused Nishan Singh and Sandeep Kumar, the others are still at large.
