President Barack Obama spoke by telephone on Wednesday with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper after an attack in Ottawa in which a soldier and an assailant were killed.
"They did have an opportunity to speak," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said, giving no other details. Harper was meeting with lawmakers at the Canadian parliament when at least one gunman stormed into the building after shooting a soldier guarding a nearby war memorial.
