Washington:
With the oil spill catastrophe now five weeks old, the Obama administration is in damage control mode.
The administration is keenly aware of the public reaction to another gulf coast disaster, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and so they have tried to be quick to respond.
But for American citizens, that's not quick enough.
Latest polls show that 53 per cent of the country has given Obama poor marks for his handling of the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
The environmental disaster has political repercussions for Obama as the administration's plan to expand off shore oil drilling has come under heightened criticism.
"The message the Obama administration has been giving to oil companies has been: Come, come and drill anywhere you like. That's is the wrong message," Paul Horsman, from Greenpeace International.
The spill, it seems, has stained not just the Gulf coast but also Obama's record.
