Oz hate brigade logs in on Facebook

Sydney:

The Australian hate brigade has opened its account on Facebook and the popular social networking site has become the new outlet for curry bashing.

A new group, which has attracted over 64,000 members on the website says, "Australia is full" and urges immigrants to "learn the language" or enjoy their "right to leave".

"I believe that a majority of students and people in Australia are opposed to any form of racism which are embodied in this particular group," said Kyle MacGregor, President, National Union of Students, Sydney.

While the rapidly growing Facebook group is adding to the rising intolerance, there's a realisation across Australian campuses that there's a need to fight racism.

"By and large Australian students have done that by taking a part in the rallies that have been organised across the country," said Russell Schmidt, general secretary, student's council, University of Sydney.

The uncouth views of the group's members may have stretched the fundamentals of free speech and misused Internet for racial attacks. And already there are calls to take it off.

"You start talking about this and something triggers it off. So I think it is a good idea to actually take it off," said Immanuel Selvary, member, NSW multi-agency taskforce.

The Facebook monitoring authorities have made it clear that there is no place for racism or any form of hate speech on Facebook. But the fact that there are many other groups with similar undertones that still exist make the rising levels of intolerance in Australia.
