Pak intensifies operation against Taliban

Islamabad: Within a day of Pakistan President Zardari's forces attacking Soofi Mohd's men, government troops have driven out the Taliban, at least from one area.

For the last couple of days, Pakistan government has been attacking Taliban militants under pressure from America. Pakistani troops have used gunships and ground attacks against the Taliban killing at least 25 militants.

The Taliban have gone beyond SWAT and tried to take over local government functions in places like Dir and Buner, which have now been cleared.

"In some parts it has been blown out of proportion. More Divisions would be diverted if required," Military spokesperson Attar Abaas said.

Zardari has clearly been stung by Hillary Clinton's criticism that Pakistan better get a grip on the Taliban, which Washington sees as closing in on not just Islamabad, but possibly also the country's nuclear arsenal.

"All Pakistani nuclear installations are under extra security and nuclear capabilities in Pakistan are in safe hands," he said.

For good measure, he added that Osama bin Laden was probably dead because there was no evidence that he was alive.

But the tragedy is only getting worse for civilians. Caught between the Islamic militants and the troops are hundreds, possibly thousands of people, who are leaving their homes.
