Pak national arrested with fake notes worth Rs 3 million

Kathmandu: A 65-year-old Pakistani woman has been arrested by Nepal Police at the Tribhuvan International Airport here for carrying fake Indian currency with a face value of Rs 3 million.

Mariam Wali Mohammad was arrested yesterday during security check upon her arrival by Pakistan International Airlines flight from Karachi, according to the airport security sources.

The woman was carrying the money in fake notes in the denominations of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500, which had been concealed among clothes in a carton.

Investigators said the woman was assigned as a carrier to smuggle the fake notes that almost resembled the genuine ones.

A preliminary investigation indicated involvement of a big racket in the circulation of counterfeit currency in Nepal, according a report in e-Kantipur.

Investigators said following Mariyam's arrest, they have found important clues about other possible members of the racket. A special team has been mobilised to nab them.

Her arrest comes even as the police here are probing the suspected involvement of Nepali nationals in running a fake Indian currency racket from Karachi through Nepal to India and the Middle East.

India has taken up with Nepal the issue of fake currency racket being run from this country at official level talks.
