Islamabad:

Fighter jets and helicopter gunships have pounded the Taliban occupied region. Pakistani military officials say more troops will join the 12,000 to 15,000 already in Swat.

Army aircrafts attacked a militant position in Kabbel tehsil, where the Taliban were occupying two girls' schools. The forces also battled militants in Kanju after the Taliban attacked an outpost just across the Swat River. More than 60 militants have reportedly been killed.

Pakistan government estimates that between 150,000 to 200,000 people have already arrived in safer areas of the North West Frontier Province over the last few days, with another 300,000 already on the move. Terrified people have been pouring into camps and narrating tales of horror.

But will the intensified army offensive reap the desired benefits for Pakistan?

At the Pakistan -Afghanistan summit, President Obama promised to fast track the 7.5 billion dollars of aid he has pledged to Pakistan.

But first the US Congress has to approve this and there are differences of opinion between Congressmen over whether this aid should come with conditions especially regarding India.

The Zardari government bristles at the talk of conditions, saying they will be unacceptable and seen as US interference in Pakistan's domestic affairs.
