Islamabad:
In yet another move to keep a check on the powers of the President, the Constitutional Reform Committee in Pakistan has transferred the authority to appoint service chiefs from the President to the Prime Minister.
Sources revealed on Thursday that the decision was unanimously agreed upon by all the major political parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Awami Muslim league.
In an amendment to Article 243 of the Constitution, the Pakistan President will now have to consult the Prime Minister before appointing service chiefs.
The move comes nearly a month after Pakistan Supreme Court scrapped the controversial National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), allowing a flood of corruption cases to be reopened against Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari.
