Pakistan Army chief says terror attacks won't be tolerated

Peshawar: Pakistan Army chief Gen Raheel Sharif today backed the government's efforts to engage militants in a peace process but emphasised that terror attacks would not be tolerated.

Sharif made the remarks during his first visit to the Corps Headquarters here after assuming the office of army chief.

He "reiterated full support to the government-led ongoing peace process", according to a military statement. "He, however, emphasised that terrorist attacks will not be tolerated and will be responded effectively," it said.

The PML-N government at the centre has offered peace talks several times to the outlawed Taliban and other militant groups.

The Taliban pulled out of the nascent peace process after their chief Hakimullah Mehsud was killed in a US drone strike last month.

Sharif appreciated the resolve shown by soldiers in the fight against terrorism and bringing stability to militancy-hit areas.

He was briefed in detail at the Corps Headquarters about operational, training and administrative matters.

He appreciated the infrastructure building and reconstruction work undertaken by the army for the socio-economic benefit of the people of militancy affected areas.
