United Nations: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived today to participate in the 70th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly. He will be staying at the Waldorf Astoria, the same hotel where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is staying.

Mr Sharif will address the United Nations on September 27 and address the annual debate of the UNGA on September 30.

PM Modi addressed the UN General Assembly on Friday, pitching for the need to reform the Security Council. India is making a strong bid for a permanent seat in an expanded Security Council.

Both Mr Modi and Mr Sharif will also attend the UN Peacekeeping Summit, but the external affairs ministry has ruled out a bilateral summit between the two leaders.

A warmth in ties had started with the summit-level talks earlier this year between PM Modi and Mr Sharif at Russia's Ufa on the sidelines of a conference. But the scheduled National Security Advisor-level talks between the two countries got scuttled after Pakistan insisted on raising the Kashmir issue and meeting the leaders of Hurriyat.

Over the last two days, a fresh war of words started between the two countries after Pakistan complained to the UN Security Council that India was building a wall along the Line of Control in violation of UN resolutions.

India said Pakistan's complaint was based on a "submission" made by terror group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin.

Last year, Mr Sharif had raised the Kashmir issue in his meeting with UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon, asking for a "permanent settlement". India has said it will reply if Mr Sharif raises Kashmir in his address this time.
