Pakistan releases video of NATO airstrikes, says apology not enough

Rawalpindi: Pakistan's military on Wednesday released footage showing what they said was the aftermath of the NATO airstrike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

The video shows, what appear to be, several damaged buildings in a mountainous area and a cloud of smoke rising.

Differing versions of Saturday's incident have emerged, but all agree that 24 soldiers were killed in attacks on two posts by NATO aircraft.

As a result of the attack, Pakistan has withdrawn from an international conference on stabilising Afghanistan due to be held in Germany. (Read)

Hours after the incident, Pakistan closed its two crossings on the western border to trucks delivering fuel, vehicles and food to NATO troops in Afghanistan.

Islamabad also ordered the US to vacate within 15 days an air base in southwest Pakistan that housed CIA drones which attack militants along the Afghan border.

The developments bode ill for future Pakistani cooperation with US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, and reflect the hardline being taken by the army, which is under pressure by an anti-American public to respond forcefully. (Read: Pakistan wants UK to mediate with US in row over NATO attack)

NATO has described the incident as "tragic and unintended", and US officials have expressed their sympathies with the families of those who died.
