London:
The Sunday Times of London has reported that parts of Pakistan's premier intelligence agency are protecting the Taliban.
The paper alleged that elements in the ISI are trying to move Taliban chief Mullah Omar and other militants from Quetta to Karachi. US officials have even discussed sending commandos to capture or kill the Taliban leaders before they are moved; Karachi would be impossible to strike.
The US has reportedly also threatened to launch airstrikes against the Taliban leadership, amid growing divisions in Washington over sending more troops to Afghanistan.
While the government of President Asif Ali Zardari is committed to wiping out terrorism, the reports says that Pakistan's powerful military does not entirely share the view. There has been tacit cooperation over the use of US drones. Some are even stationed inside Pakistan, although publicly the government denounces their use.
