Nasirnagar: Peace meetings are being held in Bangladesh's Nasirnagar today where a mob of 500 people had ransacked and vandalized Hindu homes and temples yesterday.
Two cases have been filed and nine people have been arrested, said Superintendent of Police of Brahmanbaria district Mr Mizanur Rahman, who also attended the meeting.
"The situation is now normal but Rapid Action Battalions and Border Guards Bangladesh are still on patrol the area," he said.
On Sunday, several thousand people blocked roads and demonstrated to protest a blasphemous Facebook post by a Hindu youth who had been arrested on Friday after news of the post surfaced.
The protestors were reportedly activists of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and Hefajat-e-Islam, known to be radical Islamist groups.
A group of 500 people then went on a rampage in eight Hindu-dominated areas at Nasirnagar, vandalizing around 10 temples and 100 Hindu homes.
The district administration immediately deployed a platoon of the Border Guard Bangladesh but Hindu residents were in a panic. The peace meet today is expected to restore confidence in the community.
