Kansas City:
A 300-pound (136-kilogram) chimpanzee that broke free from its chains was recaptured on Tuesday after briefly wandering around a Kansas City neighbourhood, causing damage to a police car.
Police Captain Rich Lockhart told The Kansas City Star police were alerted around midday on Tuesday of a primate on the loose a few miles (kilometres) from the Kansas City Zoo.
The police official said the ape was actually a pet that had escaped, adding that efforts to shoot the animal with a tranquiliser dart had failed.
The chimp, named Sueko, was filmed pushing a rubbish bin towards the police car, climbing onto the bonnet and thumping the passenger-side window with its fist before running off.
Sueko's owner was eventually able to coax the chimp into a cage.
Lockhart said the owner was cited for having a dangerous animal within city limits. He now faces a 1,000 dollar fine and 180 days in jail.
