Pirates capture Norwegian chemical tanker

Nairobi: Pirates have seized the Norwegian chemical tanker Samho Jewelry with 21 crew members off the coast of Oman, the European Union's anti-piracy mission Atalanta said Sunday.

The Maltese-flagged vessel was seized some 350 nautical miles southeast of the Omani capital Muscat, an Atalanta spokesman said. The crew consists of seamen from Myanmar, Korea and Indonesia.

At the moment, 29 ships with nearly 700 crew members are being held by Somali pirates, according to Atalanta. But another group, the non-governmental organisation Ecoterra, says that at least 48 ships and 822 crew are being held. Ecoterra includes on its list fishing boats and smaller-sized vessels.

With international naval missions now patrolling the waters off Somalia, the pirates have shifted their attacks increasingly further north, in the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea.
