Melbourne: An Australian pilot and her passenger walked away unscathed on Saturday after their small plane crashed into a back garden in Melbourne, Australian media reported.

The single-engine plane clipped the roof of a house before crashing in a neighbouring garden at about 3.45 pm. local time (0545 GMT) on Saturday.

The plane was coming in to land and just fell short of the runway.

Footage shown on Australian television showed the wreckage of the small aircraft next to an empty swimming pool in the garden.

The 28-year-old female pilot and her male passenger, believed to be on an aerial photography mission, were able to climb out unhurt, local media said.

Local resident Tim Broadbent told broadcaster AuBC he was first on the scene after the crash.
"I was just a street over and heard the plane spluttering and just saw it winging over and then that was it. Just heard a bang and we came up and it was in the backyard," he said.

Acting Senior Sergeant of Victoria police, Shane Rix said it was "miraculous" that the people in the plane had escaped serious injuries.
