Plane lands on California freeway after engine trouble

Los Angeles: A light aircraft made an emergency landing on a California freeway on Friday after suffering engine trouble, officials said. No-one was hurt.

The sole occupant of the Cessna 150C was unharmed after landing the plane on the State Route 125 in Otay Mesa, just north of the US border with Mexico, some 140 miles (225 km) south of Los Angeles.

The pilot reported losing power while approaching an airport near San Diego at the end of a flight from the Mexican coastal town of Ensenada, some 115 miles south of the US border.

He landed on the northbound side of the freeway. Police closed off one lane while they
removed the aircraft, said California Highway Patrol (CPH) spokesman Robert Catano.

The Cessna is registered to a California resident who is a commercial pilot, flight instructor, aircraft mechanic and experimental-airplane builder, according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records.
