Reuters: Police were called to the scene of a shooting Thursday night on the campus of Savannah State University in Georgia, an emergency dispatch supervisor and university officials said, but no details of the incident were immediately available.

The campus was placed under a security lockdown, an employee answering the telephone at the university's Public Safety Department said, but declined to give any further information.

Shortly after, asked by Reuters if there was an active gunman on the campus at that time, another department employee replied, "No, there is not."

The university then posted a Twitter message, at about 11:20 p.m. Eastern time, saying only: "The campus is currently on lockdown due to a shooting incident that occurred this evening."

The campus of the historically black university is in the heart of Savannah, an Atlantic seaport that is Georgia's oldest city and the seat of Chatham County.

The Savannah incident came a day after two television journalists were slain by a gunman during a live broadcast in Virginia and about two months after the June 17 fatal shooting of nine parishioners at a landmark African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina.
