New York: New York City police have cleared a few blocks of Manhattan while investigating a suspicious car near Union Square. At least one building has been evacuated.
The car was spotted Thursday night not far from busy Union Square subway station, where several lines connect. Police say two gas cans were seen in the back of the car.
The bomb squad and Emergency Service Unit were investigating. Union Square, near Greenwich Village, New York University and the landmark Flatiron building, sits along a major city thoroughfare.
The city had a close call May 1 when a sports utility vehicle loaded with gasoline and propane began smoking in Times Square but did not explode. Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani-born American citizen, has been arrested in that case.
