San Juan: Puerto Rico, on Thursday, welcomed one of the world's largest cruise ships, a vessel that can carry more than 6,000 people.

Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas arrived at a pier in historic Old San Juan that underwent an $8.2 million renovation to accommodate ships of that size.

The ship is expected to visit Puerto Rico nine times through April, generating an estimated nearly $5 million in revenue overall, Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla says.

Traffic was snarled in Old San Juan as Puerto Ricans drove by to gawk at the ship while thousands of tourists disembarked and crowded into nearby stores.

The Port Authority has said that through the first eight months of this year, the number of cruise ships visiting Puerto Rico increased 41 per cent over 2013.

Padilla said that nearly 207,000 cruise ship passengers are expected to visit Puerto Rico for all of December, a new monthly record for the US territory.
