Report card for Obama's Pakistan policy

Report card for Obama's Pakistan policy
New York:

On the 100th day in office the Obama administration is getting applause from the media and the public on most fronts but his lowest grades, if experts are to be believed, are on his Pakistan policy.

Within days of being sworn in, president Obama had developed a comprehensive plan for Afghanistan and Pakistan and appointed Ambassador Richard Holbrooke to be the region's Special Representative.

But 100 days later, Obama's initial momentum seems to have hit a wall.

"The biggest problem is the rapidly deteriorating situation in Pakistan and America's limited ability to deal with it. Unfortunately, the American policy towards Pakistan is just to worry and express concern and that is not a clear policy at all," said Richard Engel, Chief Foreign Correspondent NBC News.

After weeks of watching the Taliban gain fresh ground in Pakistan and Islamabad's weak response, getting a skeptical US Congress to approve of $7.5 billion in aid for Pakistan will be the Obama administration's next challenge.

"I have absolutely no confidence in the ability of the existing Pakistan government to do one blessed thing," opined Rep David Obey, D-Wisconsin, Chairman, House Appropriations Committee.

President Obama impressed both critics and supporters by taking on the issue of Pakistan days into his presidency. In his first 100 days, he has already received all the praise he is likely to get for effort alone in the first 100 days. But getting results will be harder and might well take him the rest of his term.
