Washington: The Pentagon says there are still no signs that Russia is withdrawing its troops from the Ukraine border, despite Moscow's claim that the order to pull out has been given.

Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby says small numbers of Russian troops have gone back and forth to forward operating bases that have been established near the border. He says the U.S. has seen no movement of Russian troops back to their home bases, and there are still tens of thousands along the border.

Russia's Defense Ministry has said army units were dismantling camps in the border region and preparing to leave.

NATO estimates that Russia has 40,000 troops along the border. Such withdrawal activity, if confirmed, would ease fears that the Kremlin was positioned to invade eastern Ukraine.
