School gymnasium till Friday, now a morgue

Miyagi/Iwate, Japan: Temporary morgues have been set up in the wrecked remains of public buildings in tsunami-devastated Japan's northeast as rescue workers continued a search for survivors on Wednesday.

In the town of Higashi Matsushima in Miyagi prefecture, where the tsunami struck hard, a school gymnasium has become a temporary resting place for the dead.

Desperate survivors can be seen walking along the lines of stretchers laid out on the muddy floor, lifting blankets to try and identify their missing loved ones.

Meanwhile snow added to the work of rescue workers sifting through rubble in devastated Iwate Prefecture as they tried to find survivors following Friday's massive earthquake and tsunami that is estimated to have killed more than 10-thousand people.

Several centimeters of fresh snow covered the soaked remains of buildings and the fall in temperature has reduced further the chances of finding anyone alive.

Soldiers from the Self Defence Forces have joined firemen and professional rescue crews walking in lines across the devastated towns looking for any sign of life.
