Scribe punished in Sudan for wearing trousers

Darfur:

Lubna Hussein, a journalist attached to the UN mission in Sudan has decided to take on the system after she was sentenced to 40 lashes for wearing trousers in public as punishment in violation of the accepted Islamic dress code.

Hussein was among 13 women arrested during a raid at a cafe on July 3. Ten of the women were flogged on Tuesday and fined 250 Sudanese pounds, but Hussein and two others have decided to go to trial.

"I can also tell you, as far as I know as a Muslim, the Article 152 (under which Hussien was charged) is in contradiction of Islamic Sharia law," she said.

The UN offered to stand by Hussein, but she has decided to quit the organisation.

"We explained to the court that Lubna would like to have the case tried before the court and would not like to use the immunity as a bar to the trial," said Nabil Adeeb, Lubna Hussein's lawyer.

Hussein's case has now become a rallying point for the battle against severe dress codes imposed by the Sudan regime.
