Karachi, Pakistan: Senior Pakistani journalist Aftab Alam was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Karachi today. He was a former employee of Geo TV and other local channels.
This is the second killing of a journalist in Karachi in a span of 24 hours. On Tuesday, a satellite engineer, Arshad Ali Jafri, was killed when a GEO TV van was attacked in Karachi.
According to police sources, Mr Alam was shot outside his home in north Karachi just minutes after he had dropped his children home from school. He was shot in the head near Sir Syed market.
Mr Alam was taken to hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. According to the police, three bullets were recovered from the site.
The Karachi Union of Journalists said that Mr Alam's killing posed a question mark over the efficacy of the government and security agencies. They have demanded the immediate arrest of killers of both Mr Alam and Mr Jafri.
The police remained clueless about the motive of Tuesday's attack, but investigators said that they were sure it was a murder attempt.
The Geo News management called it a "targeted attack", and said that it was meant to harass not only the channel's staff, but the entire Pakistani media.
