Lahore: Hours after twin blasts rocked Lahore which claimed 45 lives, news reports say a series of blasts have hit the same area of the city. Seven back-to-back low intensity explosions have taken place at Allama Iqbal Town, a residential area in Lahore. It was a day of blasts for Lahore as nine explosions hit the city in a single day.
The reports on Friday said rescue workers have been dispatched to the scene and that casualties were feared. Announcements are being made from mosques in the area for residents to remain indoors.
The explosive device went off in an empty plot of land near Moon Market, state-run Rescue 1122 service spokesman Fahim Jahanzeb said. The seventh blast took place in Karim block of the city.
The blasts have added to the panic prevailing in the city and shops and commercial establishments in Moon Market and other parts of Lahore closed down.
The explosions on Friday came less than a week after a suicide car bomber tore through the office of the Special Intelligence Agency killing at least 13 people.
Earlier in the day, at least 45 people, including ten soldiers,were killed and 100 others injured in twin suicide attacks targeting an armypatrol within the heavily-guarded cantonment here, the latest in a wave ofterror strikes across Pakistan.
The blasts occurred 15 seconds apartnear a mosque where a large number of people had gathered for Friday prayers.The mosque is frequented by serving and retired army personnel, local residentssaid.
"Two suicide attackers struck thearmy vehicles which were on patrol. The blasts occurred 15 seconds apart,"said Special Superintendent of Police (operations) Chaudhry Shafiq Ahmed.
City police chief Pervez Rathore saidat least 10 soldiers were among the dead.
"We have found the heads of both suicidebombers. They were on foot," said SSP Ahmed.
Other officials said the bombers wereaged between 17 and 20 years.
One head was intact while the featuresof the other were unrecognizable, they said. (With PTI inputs)
