Moving to capture the remaining LTTE areas in the north, Sri Lankan troops fought their way into a strategic township near Mullaittivu after killing seven Tamil Tiger rebels in fierce clashes, the military said on Monday.
Troops pushed through the LTTE barricade at Sugandirapuram in north of Irruttumadu and entered the township on Sunday despite intermittent LTTE resistance attacks, the Defence Ministry said.
According to military sources, troops have found seven bodies of LTTE cadres, five T-56 assault rifles, a combat camouflaged jeep and a land cruiser during search operations. Meanwhile, Air Force fighter jets pounded and blasted a camouflaged ",Sea Tiger", building concealed from view in a jungle area of Wellamulla Waikkal in Mullaittivu on Monday.
The entire building complex including Sea Tiger boats and tractors used for towing them were completely destroyed, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said. SLAF Kfir and MIG-27 fighter jets also launched air sorties targeting an LTTE Sea Tiger facility located north of Mullaittivu lagoon this morning.
Air Force spokesperson, Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said that the air raids were launched at around 7.00 am. The Sea Tiger base had been well camouflaged and boats, trailers and tractors were also seen in the base, he added.
In a huge haul, the army recovered 155 anti-personnel mines, ammunition and weapons during search operations conducted at Chalai area in Mullaittivu yesterday. The army also reported damages due to explosion of anti-personnel mines at Chalai on Sunday afternoon.
In other ground clashes, LTTE cadres suffered damages in confrontation with the troops in Thamaranpuram in Mullaittivu on Sunday, while the troops sustained minor damages in clashes in Naddankandal area, the Defence Ministry said.
The troops recovered a huge stock of military hardware, including Claymore, anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in Ramanathapuram in Kilinochchi on Sunday.
