Shooting near US grade school leads to lockdown

COLUMBUS, Ohio: A school district spokesman says a shooting on a street in front of an elementary school in Ohio led to a precautionary lockdown of the building, but no children were injured or involved in the shooting.

Columbus City Schools spokesman Andrew Marcelain said he had few details about the Thursday afternoon shooting near Liberty Elementary School. He says children are dismissed at about 3:30 p.m. local time, and were quickly taken back inside when the shooting occurred.

Marcelain says the school was locked down for about an hour, with no one allowed to leave or enter the building.

Police did not immediately return calls seeking details.

Marcelain says the school serves kindergarten through fifth grade students and has at least a couple hundred children.
